Join Yle’s Muuttolintujen kevät campaign! Download the Research for JYU app from the University of Jyväskylä to your smartphone, record bird songs, and make bird observations – with the help of a supercomputer’s AI, you can easily identify different bird species while contributing to cutting-edge research.
With this app, you can safely participate in various top-level research projects as a citizen scientist and help produce new scientific knowledge. In the spring of 2025, the app focuses on monitoring migratory birds and nature experiences, with many more research projects to come in the future.
The University of Jyväskylä respects individual privacy. We do not share users' personal data outside their devices.
In the bird migration tracking feature, you can record short or long (interval) recordings, as well as point recordings. The recording and the user’s exact location are sent to a server, which identifies the bird species from the audio. You will receive feedback on the identified species, and your observation will also be displayed anonymously on the app’s map.
The app keeps track of the bird species you have identified and allows you to earn virtual rewards, which you can share on social media. This makes birdwatching not only interesting but also playfully competitive. Invite your friends to join!
