The Compass follows the complete story of the Buddha's life, summarized in 28 chapters of the Mahāṭakaṭṭhāna (a vernacular translation of the Buddha's deeds), and assigns them to eight "stupas," sacred objects that symbolize important events in the Buddha's life.
