Access Light

The AccessLight tool is designed to measure the useable light in an environment. The AccessLight tool goes beyond the standard light meters available on most mobile devices by defining and basing the accessibility ratings on the type of lighting being measured. Inadequate lighting can prevent those with low vision from completing important tasks, such as reading menus or documents, filling out forms, or seeing direction signs in hallways. Excessive lighting may cause headaches or vision problems for those with an increased sensitivity to light. 

The three types of lighting that are measured by the AccessLight tool are ambient, task, and accent. Ambient lighting is the general lighting for the entire room from overhead lights, natural lighting, or other sources. Task lighting is the type of lighting needed to perform a task such as reading or writing at a table or desk. Accent lighting highlights objects such as pictures and wall menus. Accessible lighting is usually based on the minimal lighting, or minimal average lighting available. The AccessLight tool can be used to measure all three types of lighting. 

While not designed to be an ADA assessments, determination of accessibility is based on ADA concepts.
