The 2013 curriculum is designed to welcome the 21st Century learning model. In it there is a shift in learning from students being informed to students finding out from various learning sources beyond the boundaries of educators and educational units. The role of English in this learning model is very central considering that there are more learning resources in English compared to learning resources in all other languages.
The increasingly flat world with information and communication technology means that relationships can no longer be limited by national borders. The 2013 curriculum recognizes the important role of English in conveying ideas beyond Indonesia's borders and in absorbing ideas from outside that can be used for the benefit of the nation and state. In this way, the formulated competencies of secondary education graduates can be a reflection of a nation that contributes actively to world society and civilization.
In line with the above roles, English language learning for Class XII Secondary Education presented in this book is designed to improve language skills. The presentation uses a text-based learning approach, both oral and written, by placing English as a vehicle for communication. Understanding the type, rules and context of a text is emphasized, making it easier for students to grasp the explicit and implied meaning in a text; also to present ideas in text form that is easy to understand the meaning of the content and appreciate the beauty of the choice of word sequences.
As part of the 2013 Curriculum which emphasizes the importance of balancing attitudes, knowledge and skills, English language skills are required to be formed through continuous learning. This starts with increasing knowledge competency about the types, rules and context of a text, followed by competency in the skills of presenting written and oral texts. This competency is carried out both planned and spontaneously with correct pronunciation and intonation, and leads to the formation of an attitude of language politeness and an attitude of respect for the beauty of language.
