App Description
Velocity calculation.
• Calculating the velocity based on the time and provided distance.
• Taking a photo after the velocity calculation.
Instructions:
1. Provide the distance that the vehicle travels. To acquire this, follow these steps:
a. Correctly choose the checkpoints. Choose the points with the most uniform backgrounds, preferably similar to one another.
b. Provide the distance between the checkpoints. Preferably measure it yourself using standard instruments, like measuring tape. To determine the distance, you can also use some fixed infrastructure elements like traffic posts along the road or dashed lines drawn on the road. Then input the distance manually. A good and practical method is:
i. Take several initial photos. Perform few initial speed calculations using “take photo” option (provide an approximate distance). Once you have identified the checkpoints where vehicles are detected, get the distance between them and enter it manually into the application. Then return with your device to the exactly same position as before, set the exact same checkpoints as before, and proceed with the speed calculation.
If none of the above is possible, the application provides 3 additional ways to help you to calculate an approximate distance:
ii. Calculate the approximate distance using provided map. Just read the distance between two checkpoints that you indicate on the map.
iii. Calculate the approximate distance using built-in camera. You can calculate the approximate distance remotely (but not too far away from you. The accuracy of this method lowers with the distance from the examined object). You need to provide your height. Default is 150 cm. Follow instructions on the screen.
iv. Calculate the approximate distance using GPS position. Please remember that the best GPS accuracy is 3 meters or more (depends on quality of GPS signal at your spot). When using this method wait until the accuracy of the GPS position becomes stable and high enough – preferably marked in green.
c. Calculation of the approximate average speed. Set proper sensitivity levels for the current light conditions at your spot.
i. “Camera Sensitivity” indicates how sensitive the detection process should be. The higher the level, the smaller change detected at the detection point triggers the calculations.
ii. “Vehicle Precision” indicates the sensitivity of vehicle detection between two checkpoints. The higher the value, the closer the vehicle detected in the second checkpoint must resemble the vehicle detected in the first checkpoint.
iii. “Detection Field” indicates how big the detection areas of the vehicles in the checkpoints are. Note that with higher value, you can expect worse detection precision of each of the checkpoints. This, in turn, might affect accuracy of the speed calculation, as the actual distance an object travels will vary.
d. Detection of the registration plates. Please follow the simple video tutorial displayed when detecting is enabled. In particular please:
i. Select the area where plates are expected to be detected. Adjust the area size and position.
ii. Choose the right plane for the plates. Rotate the example plate so it matches as good as possible the expected plane for detected plates.
Note that in order to successfully detect the plates, the picture must be taken under good lighting conditions, and the plates should be clearly visible from a very close distance.
