This interactive educational application features drawings of the local fauna of the Amazon rainforest of Peru, with the names of the animals in the Matses language and local Spanish, accompanied by audio in the Matses language that are played on click. Animals are taxonomically organized according to division, order, and family to which they belong. The main objectives are to familiarize indigenous Matses students with scientific classification and to promote the intergenerational transmission of traditional ecological knowledge. It can be used by emerging readers to learn to read at word level in Matses. Those who are not Matses will find this application useful to become familiar with the fauna of Amazonian Peru and to learn the vernacular terms in Spanish for these animals.
This 129-page app is the first of its kind. It illustrates the incredibly high animal diversity found in the western Amazon along with the sophisticated traditional ecological knowledge of the Matses people with illustrations of 504 species of animals drawn by artist Matses Guillermo Nëcca Pëmen Mënquë. Contains audio clips with Matses names of the 504 species in the book. The application contains pictures of almost all animal species that have names in the Matses language. Illustrations of species in all major categories of animals present in Matses territory, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects, centipedes, arachnids, crustaceans, mollusks, worms, and other invertebrates. More than 200 animal families are represented in 82 orders. Dr. David w. Fleck in consultation with the Matses elders using published field guides, photographs, and audio recordings of animal calls. Dr. Fleck is a biologist and linguist who lives with the Matses and has been conducting biological, linguistic, ethnographic and ethnobiological research with them since 1994.
