He was born and died in Basra. He frequently traveled through the desert, acquiring knowledge and stories, which he would then present to the caliphs, for which he was rewarded with generous gifts. His stories are numerous. Harun al-Rashid called him "the devil of poetry." Al-Akhfash said, "We have never seen anyone more knowledgeable about poetry than al-Asma'i." Abu al-Tayyib al-Lughawi said, "He was the most proficient in language, the most knowledgeable about poetry, and the most prodigious in memory." Al-Asma'i himself said, "I have memorized ten thousand rajaz verses."
