📖 The Book of the Neighbor's Rights (The Neighbor's Rights) by Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi 📖

The noble texts from the Holy Quran and the hadiths of the Prophet indicate the importance of the neighbor's rights. God Almighty has recommended treating neighbors well in Surat al-Nisa, saying: {And worship God and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, and the neighbor with wealth. {The kin, the neighbor who is a stranger, the companion by your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess.} The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, explained the close relationship between faith and honoring one's neighbor, saying: (Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent. Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him honor his neighbor. Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him honor his guest.)

On the authority of Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: “A man said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, such-and-such a woman is known for her frequent prayers, charity, and fasting, but she harms her neighbors with her tongue.’ He said: ‘She is in Hell.’ He said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, such-and-such a woman is known for her little fasting, charity, and prayer, but she gives away a great deal of dried cheese in charity, yet she does not harm her neighbors with her tongue.’ He said: ‘She is in Paradise.’” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Gabriel kept advising me to be kind to my neighbors until I thought he would make them inheritors.”

Al-Dhahabi (may God have mercy on him) said that this hadith demonstrates the importance of the neighbor's rights in Islam, the importance of treating them kindly, not harming them, and honoring them. Not mistreating them, and preserving their rights is a duty for Muslims. Therefore, the hadith was narrated in this manner, as the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) treated them as heirs, as if they were relatives, with the same connection and kindness they have.

Al-Dhahabi's book, "The Rights of the Neighbor," is of particular importance to researchers of Islamic sciences interested in asceticism, spiritual refinement, and related topics. It falls within the category of books on Sufism and austerity, which connect to many branches of Islamic knowledge, including the sciences of jurisprudence, creed, and so forth.

Author:
Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Uthman ibn Qaymaz ibn Abdullah al-Turkmani, originally from al-Farqi, then from Damascus, Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi, a hadith scholar, imam, and hafiz. He combined two qualities that are rarely found in our history. In addition to his extensive knowledge of Islamic history, both events and figures, he combined a profound knowledge of the principles of criticism and validation of men, establishing himself as a unique school of thought. Imam al-Dhahabi is one of the scholars who entered the field of history through the lens of the Prophet's hadith and its sciences. This was evident in his exceptional attention to biographies, which became the basis of many of his books and the focus of his historical thought. It is said that Imam al-Dhahabi was given the name "the Golden One" because he weighed men as a jeweler weighs gold.
