Taiwanese (Baidu: Tâi-oân-ōe; Taiwanese: Tâi-uân-uē), commonly known as Taiwanese (Baidu: Tâi-gí / Tâi-gú) or Taiwanese Minnan, is a language derived from the Quanzhou-Zhangzhou dialect of Minnan. It is spoken in Taiwan and the Penghu Islands. It is the native language of Taiwanese people of Minnan descent and is one of the national languages of the Republic of China. Its origins lie in the Fujian immigrants recruited by the Dutch authorities to Taiwan during the Dutch colonial period. It spread to Taiwan and Penghu in 1661, when Zheng Chenggong led his Quanzhou and Zhangzhou troops across the sea from Kinmen in Tongan County to conquer Tainan. For over 230 years thereafter, it was adopted as the language of instruction and the official language by both Zheng Dongning of the Ming Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty Taiwan governments. During the subsequent Japanese colonial period, it was named Taiwanese, with Tongan or Amoy dialect as the standard pronunciation. The Taiwan Governor-General's Office authorized or published numerous Japanese translations, and Taiwanese was mandated as a mandatory exam subject for civil service examinations. Compared to its Fujian origins, Taiwanese is distinguished by the presence of some Japanese loanwords and a generally uniform tone, similar to that of its native Tongan dialect. The "Quan" and "Zhang" differences are primarily due to the regularity of certain corresponding final vowels.

From the mid-17th century, especially after the lifting of the ban on crossings to Taiwan, a large number of immigrants from southern Fujian (Minnan) and a smaller number from eastern Guangdong arrived in Taiwan, with residents of Quanzhou and Zhangzhou prefectures forming the majority. As immigrants from Quanzhou and Zhangzhou expanded their settlements throughout Taiwan, their language became the predominantly spoken language in Taiwan and the Penghu Islands. Despite official promotion of Japanese and then Mandarin (Mandarin Chinese) during the Japanese colonial and postwar periods, Taiwanese remains widely heard in Taiwan today. According to the 2009 Taiwan Yearbook, approximately 73% of the Taiwanese population can speak Taiwanese. In the early postwar period, elementary schools were allowed to teach Chinese characters in Taiwanese. However, after decades of the national language policy, the current education system uses Taiwanese far less than Mandarin in instruction, and regulations regarding Taiwanese writing are incomplete. This has resulted in younger generations of Taiwanese speakers struggling to speak the language fluently. Without a significant policy shift, Taiwanese could become extinct among younger generations within thirty years due to poor policy and education. While no explicit ban is in place, mainstream media still lack Taiwanese voiceovers in youth programs, such as idol dramas and cartoons.
