- Written test (theory test):
+ When you are confident enough about the laws, traffic signs and traffic safety regulations, you can make an appointment with the nearest DMV over the phone or online to register for a driver's license test in the US;
+ When taking the test, you need to present ID / pastport / green card or I-94 card (if you have a nonimmigrant visa);
+ Apply for a driver's license (original) and pay fees;
+ Submit portrait and thumb fingerprints;
+ Provide date of birth, social security number (SSN). If you do not have an SSN you will need to provide your personal tax identification number;
+ Having checked eyesight to be capable of driving;
+ The theory test will have a total of 46 questions, you will pass if you answer at least 39 correct questions;
+ You will have 3 chances to take the test, if you continue to fail the 3rd test, you need to wait 7 days to apply again;
+ Normally, this period is not limited in time, so you should consider carefully before choosing an answer;
+ You can take the test on paper or computer and answer the questions by choosing A, B, C, D (multiple choice test). If you take the test on a computer, you will know the results immediately after the test is over. If you take the test on paper, the staff at DMV will tell you the results;
Once you pass the test you will be licensed to operate your vehicle if you have a licensed driver sitting next to you to guide you.
- Learn to drive:
+ One good thing for Vietnamese people is that in America, people also drive on the right hand side. This makes it difficult for those from some countries that have a habit of driving on the left hand side such as Australia, Japan, Macao, and Thailand.
Even though you already have a driver's license or already know how to drive in Vietnam, you should also take some driving lessons in the US to be more confident before taking the practical exam. You can hire a private teacher (over 25 years old) or join a driving school. The cost of studying with a private teacher is usually cheaper and is calculated by the hour.
- The behind-the-wheel driving test (also known as the behind-the-wheel test):
+ When you are confident enough, you can carry your learner permit and test on the road;
+ The car that you use for the test must be in good working condition such as signal light, brake (brake), horn and especially insurance;
When taking the driving test in the US, a supervisor will sit beside you and ask you to drive a variety of skills including parking skills;
+ Each exam lasts from 10 - 15 minutes. The total score on this test is 100, if you score 70 or more you will pass;
+ If you make some small mistakes, they can show you how to fix it in the next drive;
+ This supervisor will let you know the results right after the test is over;
+ Just like the theory test, you will have 3 opportunities to take the test, but each time you take the test you pay 6 USD fee;
+ If you fail the exam at this time, you can apply for the test right away, but if you are not really confident, you should fix the error that you have encountered before applying for the test again or more practice.
