Egypt’s ancient history and culture are endlessly fascinating. This
extraordinarily civilization lasted more than 3000 years, from the formation of
the Egyptian state c3100 BC through to its annexation as a province of the
Roman Empire c30 BC. The surviving art, architecture, craftsmanship and
literature from ancient Egypt provide evidence of an extremely sophisticated
culture. Trade and other forms of contact between Egypt and other parts of
the ancient world, particularly Nubia, the Middle East and the Mediterranean
World, resulted in the sharing and spreading of ideas. Egyptian religion and
philosophy, as well as other intellectual pursuits such as science, medicine
and mathematics, were influential in Ancient Greece and other civilizations,
out of which our own ways of life and belief systems have emerged.
In this project we present a range of topics, in order to illustrate how rich and
varied the ancient Egyptian life-experience was, and how interesting the
history is. We explore many aspects of ancient Egyptian culture and society,
the skills of the artisans, and the most intriguing of the Pharaohs. We hope to
draw attention to the remarkable similarities, as well as the expected
differences, between ancient Egyptian behavior, belief and thought, and our human experience today.
H.E. Mohammed Al Suwaidi has provided the inspiration and has made this project possible. Egyptologist Lucia Gahlin has provided the ideas, images and voice-over, and Sound and Post-Production expert Mabrouk Acherir the audio-visual expertise. Together we bring you these short clips which we present as windows on the world of the ancient Egyptians.
