How Bid Whist works
Players bid the number of books they expect to win above six, or pass. Bids can be Uptown, Downtown, or No Trumps. The winning bidder chooses the contract, takes the kitty, discards, and then tries to win enough books with their partner.
For Uptown and Downtown contracts, the winning bidder sets the trump suit. For No Trumps contracts, the winning bidder sets the direction. Players must follow suit if possible. If they cannot follow suit, they may play any card, including trump.
The bidding team scores when they make their contract and loses points when they are set. The first team to reach the target score wins.
