True Phonetics: Phonetic Literacy for All
At True Phonetics, we’re revolutionizing how the world approaches speech and pronunciation. Whether you're learning a new language, refining your accent, or simply curious about the sounds of speech, True Phonetics empowers you with the tools to truly master pronunciation.
Central to this journey is the New Phonetic Model (NPM), our modified version of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). By learning to read and write using NPM, you’ll unlock the ability to:
Identify Sounds with Precision: Each letter in NPM always represents the same sound, eliminating guesswork. With this fluency, you can pinpoint the exact sounds being spoken in any context.
Master Sound Production: Once you can confidently identify all the sounds, you’ll shift your focus to the physical act of producing them accurately and naturally.
Explore Speech Across Accents: Recognize, practice, and master accents in languages like English, enhancing your ability to speak authentically and connect globally.
Why NPM Instead of IPA?
The NPM is easier to learn than the IPA for almost everyone on Earth and it focuses on what really matters. Differences include:
- Writing the y sound in yellow with a y instead of a j, because English is the international language; not German.
- Writing the awfully named "flap t" with a d (instead of a t or a ɾ) as it is indistinguishable from a t (water in American English is wɔ:dər)
- Using the upside down t symbol ʇ for the stop t
- Using ɔ for the open o sound and o for the closed o sound
- Writing the high u sound with ü
We understand that this approach may require a small amount of adjustment for those already familiar with IPA, but it dramatically reduces the learning curve for most learners. Our mission is to bring phonetics into the mainstream for the first time, making it approachable for learners worldwide.
What Makes True Phonetics Different?
Accessible Learning: True Phonetics is designed for complete beginners with no prior knowledge of phonetics. Our intuitive system breaks down complex concepts into clear, manageable steps.
Interactive and Engaging Gameplay: Learn by watching videos, listening to sounds, and transcribing them using our phonetic keyboard. Progress through levels that challenge you with reading comprehension, writing, translation, and even speaking exercises.
Clarity Through Simplicity: Unlike traditional methods, the New Phonetic Model avoids silent letters and ambiguous rules. Every letter represents exactly one sound, helping you develop a clear understanding of s
