App Description
A journey through the geological history of northwestern Costa Rica
This application offers a geological tour of the Santa Elena Peninsula for educational and tourism purposes.
This application offers a geological tour of Bolaños Island for educational and geotourism purposes, allowing users to navigate and admire incredible and wonderful landscapes while learning about the geological heritage of northern Costa Rica.
Geology is the science that studies rocks, from the perspective of their composition, origin, and the processes that affect them before, during, and after their formation.
Northwest Costa Rica features rocks of diverse origins, with ages ranging from approximately 170 million years ago (Middle Jurassic) to the present day (Quaternary). These tours focus on the Guanacaste Conservation Area, including sites such as the Santa Elena Peninsula, Bolaños Island, the Murciélago Archipelago, Santa Elena Bay, and others. Almost all of these territories have been declared World Heritage Sites (UNESCO, 1999, ID No. 928).
In this region, geological features are a key element of the landscape, supporting the flora and fauna. This makes them valuable for projects in various areas of interest, such as education, tourism, and raising awareness about the importance of national parks.
The area does not have many job opportunities; the main economic activity is fishing. Therefore, the development of other activities, such as geotourism, will provide direct and indirect employment for nearby residents, fostering economic development and offering cultural and historical recreation to visitors. This represents a valuable resource for preserving Costa Rica's geological heritage.
