FACTS AND FACTS ABOUT THE CPF

The Individual Taxpayer Registry (CPF) is a registry maintained by the Brazilian Federal Revenue Service, in which any individual, regardless of age or nationality, including deceased individuals, can register once. Each registrant is uniquely identified by an 11-digit CPF registration number.

The CPF query aims to identify the status of the Individual Taxpayer Registry (CPF). This type of query is performed on the official Federal Revenue Service website and aims to verify whether the CPF holder is in good standing or if their CPF has any outstanding issues related to the Federal Revenue Service, such as a missing Income Tax Return.

Until June 2011, the Federal Revenue Service issued the CPF card, in plastic format, without a photo, for verification purposes. Under current legislation, proof of CPF registration can be provided by mentioning the CPF number on identity documents, such as a driver's license, birth certificate, work permit, professional ID card, and professional cards issued by government agencies.

Individuals who:

✔️ reside in Brazil and are the passive party in a primary or secondary tax relationship, whether as a taxpayer or responsible party, as well as their respective legal representatives, are required to register with the CPF;
✔️ engage in real estate transactions of any kind in Brazil;
✔️ have bank, savings, or investment accounts in Brazil, or operate in the financial market in the country;
✔️ operate in the financial market in Brazil;
✔️ own, in Brazil, assets and rights subject to public registration or specific records, including real estate, vehicles, vessels, and aircraft; ✔️ If over 14 years of age, they must be listed as dependents on their Income Tax Return;
✔️ Due to a requirement from government agencies or entities.

The CPF may assume the following registration statuses:
✅ Regular, when there are no registration inconsistencies and no DIRPF omissions;
✅ Pending regularization, when there is a DIRPF omission;
✅ Suspended, when there is a registration inconsistency;
✅ Canceled due to multiple registrations, when there is more than one CPF registration for the same person;
✅ Canceled due to death without an estate;
✅ Canceled due to estate closure; or
✅ Void, in cases where fraud is detected.
