Lífshlaupið is a health and motivational project of the Icelandic Sports and Olympic Association that appeals to all age groups. The background to Lífshlaup is that in 2005 the then Minister of Education, Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, appointed a working group to review sports issues in Iceland with the aim of formulating sports policy. The working group presented ideas for shaping Iceland's sports policy in the report, Íþróttavæðir Ísland, increased participation, changed lifestyles.
