Burdah (Arabic: البردة) is a Qasidah (songs) which contains poetry about praise/sholawat to the Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. The poem was composed by Imam al Busiri from Egypt.
In Indonesia, the Burdah is often chanted, especially by the Nahdliyin. Qashidah Burdah is one of the most popular works in Islamic literature. It contains rhymes of praise to the Prophet Muhammad SAW, moral messages, spiritual values, and the spirit of struggle.
Muhammad Abdul Mun'im al-Khafaji in his book al-Adab fi at-Turats as-Sufi tells the story behind the compilation of Burdah which was originally titled al-Kawakib al-Durriyah which means the sparkling stars. This kasidah was composed by a poet and also a Sufi from Busir known as Maulana al-Busiri. Died in 696 H, he lived in two periods of Islamic rule in Egypt, namely the Ayyubid dynasty and the Mamalik dynasty. Sya'ir for al-Busiri is a work of art that cannot be separated from it. His poems have a lot of praise (madh) on the Prophet so that he is nicknamed Madih ar-Rasul.
