The Shield feature uses the App Usage Access permission (PACKAGE_USAGE_STATS) to identify which apps are in use during focus sessions and block them locally on the device. No usage data is collected, stored, or sent to external servers — all processing happens on the device itself. Permission is requested with an explicit warning before activation, only when the user starts a focus session, and can be revoked at any time in the Android settings.

The Shield also uses VpnService locally on the device to block access to websites with harmful content during focus sessions. The VPN connection filters DNS requests directly on the device — no traffic is sent to external servers. The VPN is activated only during focus sessions and automatically terminates at the end of the session.
