These are benefits, excerpts, hints, and guidance from a letter by a scholar known as the Doctor of Hearts. Hypocrisy is one of the most dangerous diseases of the heart. Hypocrites ({In their hearts is disease, so Allah has increased their disease}) (Al-Baqarah 2:10). Ibn al-Qayyim - may God have mercy on him - explored their stories by examining and contemplating verses in the texts of the two revelations. It is taken from the book "Madarij al-Salikin Bayna Manazil Iyyaka Na'budu Wa Iyyaka Nasta'in" (The Stages of the Wayfarers Between the Manazils of "You Alone We Worship and You Alone We Ask for Help"), which discusses the characteristics of the hypocrites. Hypocrites and their actions in every time and place, and a warning against their evil and danger.

Two texts from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) concerning the signs of a hypocrite are mentioned. The first is his saying: "The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he breaks his promise; and when he is entrusted, he betrays." The second text is: "If a person has four characteristics, he is a hypocrite, and if he has one of them, he has a characteristic of hypocrisy until he abandons it: when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he breaks his promise; when he quarrels, he behaves wickedly; and when he makes a covenant, he betrays it."

Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr ibn Ayyub ibn Sa'd al-Zar'i al-Dimashqi, Shams al-Din, Abu Abdullah, known as Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya. He was a prominent figure in Islamic religious reform in the eighth century AH. He was born in Damascus to Kurdish parents and studied under Ibn Taymiyyah al-Dimashqi, who was also born to Kurdish parents and was influenced by him. His profession was as an imam at al-Jawziyya, teaching at al-Sadriya and elsewhere, and issuing fatwas and writing. His connection with Ibn Taymiyyah: Historians agree that the date of the meeting was in 712 AH, the year he returned from his travels to Damascus, where he settled until his death in 751 AH.

The hypocrite's speech pleases the listener because of its sweetness and gentleness, and God bears witness to the lies in his heart. "And among the people is he whose speech pleases you in worldly life, and he calls God to witness as to what is in his heart, yet he is the most quarrelsome."

You will find one of them among the group of people of faith, engaged in prayer, remembrance, asceticism, and striving. "And when he turns away, he strives throughout the land to cause corruption therein and destroy crops and livestock. And God does not like corruption."

The hypocrites are secretive. The secrets of hypocrisy are revealed by God on their faces and in the slips of their tongue, and He marks them with a mark that is not hidden from the people of insight and faith. "Or do those in whose hearts is disease think that God will never expose their hatred?"

The seed of hypocrisy grows on two roots: the root of lies and the root of hypocrisy. Its source is two eyes: weak insight and weak resolve. The merchandise of hypocrisy is like a mirage. "A thirsty person thinks it is water until, when he comes to it, he finds it is nothing. But he finds Allah with Him, and He pays him his due. And Allah is swift in account."
