The English-American journalist Arthur Winn is considered to be its inventor, who on December 21, 1913, published the first crossword puzzle in the New York World newspaper.
Definitions of words are given in text format. The words themselves, which are filled in an empty table horizontally and vertically, must be recognized by them, and individual letters are almost always common to two different words. Only 1 letter is filled in each separate square. The squares where the first letter of the words must be placed are numbered or (for large-scale crossword puzzles) the meaning of the word being searched for is entered in them.
