TAP THE TEMPO

Tap anywhere on the pad. The reading settles after three or four taps and keeps averaging as you go, so a shaky first tap does not poison the result. It reads to one decimal place, and a steadiness indicator tells you how much to trust it, few apps show you that, and it is the honest answer to "why does the number jump".

A METRONOME THAT SOUNDS

Three voices: a dry click for headphones, a wood block that cuts through an acoustic guitar, an electronic beep that survives a drum kit. The downbeat is accented with a higher sample, not with a volume bump.

It does not drift. Every beat is timed against the start of the count on a monotonic clock, never chained from the beat before, so the error never piles up over a long practice session. Time signatures 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 and 6/8, subdivisions in eighths, triplets and sixteenths, and a vibration on the beat for a noisy room.

DELAY TIMES, FROM THE TEMPO

Quarter, dotted eighth, eighth, eighth triplet, sixteenth, in milliseconds and in hertz, for a delay pedal, a plugin, a tremolo or an auto-wah. The dotted eighth is there on its own line, because that is the one everyone looks up and nobody lists.

Reverb too: a pre-delay of one eighth keeps the tail off the attack, and the decay is one bar at your tempo.
