Readings come from your phone's built-in accelerometer, so what you see depends on that sensor and on how flat the back of your phone or its case really is. Calibrating on a surface you trust helps a lot. It is a handy everyday level for home jobs, not a certified instrument: for structural, safety-critical or trade work, use a physical spirit level.
