In short, a vegvísir ("wayfinder" or "way shower"), is an Icelandic magical stave, it is said to aid the bearer in finding their way through rough weather, it is not the same as a traditional compass that may be found today. It is often called the Viking Compass, or Norse Compass. It is attested in ~1860 and no earlier (receives no mention in Norse mythology), though this symbol may not have existed during the Viking Age, similar symbols may have, as sagas and eddas do mention of similar magical tools. The Vegvísir app takes this symbol and meaning, and turns it into a real functioning compass that can be used how the vegvísir was meant to be used; to let users find their way through rough weather.
