This application includes movies and television series that predate the 16:9 widescreen format which is adopted by contemporary filmmakers and used for HD video. Older content was formatted to use a 4:3 aspect ratio, which can only be displayed with black bars on any 16:9 screen.

The black bars are intentional and improve the end user experience. Removing the black bars would cause videos to either scale or crop inappropriately, resulting in the loss of important visual information.

Vertical black bars are the visual standard for displaying all older movies and television on modern landscape oriented machines; black bars are used for theatrical screenings, commercial broadcast, and video on demand in the US and internationally, they are used both vertically and horizontally to display a variety of non-16:9 aspect ratios.

The black bars shows on 4:3 content cannot be removed from this application.
