App Description

George Trails: George's largest network of outdoor trails.

George Trails App - Complete System Description
George Trails is a comprehensive mobile application designed for outdoor enthusiasts exploring the trail network in George, South Africa. Built with Flutter and Firebase, the app provides a complete trail discovery, navigation, and safety platform for hikers, mountain bikers, trail runners, and paddlers.

Core Trail Features
The app features an extensive database of trails across multiple route systems in the George region. Each trail includes detailed information such as difficulty ratings, distance, elevation profiles, estimated duration, and high-resolution images. Users can browse trails by activity type (hiking, mountain biking, trail running, paddling) and access comprehensive trail details including GPX route files that can be downloaded and viewed on interactive maps with elevation profiles.

The trail discovery system includes advanced filtering and search capabilities, allowing users to find trails that match their skill level and preferred activities. Users can save favorite trails for quick access and view their trail exploration history with detailed statistics.

Real-Time Trail Tracking
A standout feature is the live trail exploration system that provides real-time GPS tracking during trail activities. When users start exploring a trail, the app records their location every two minutes, creating a complete GPS trail of their journey. The tracking screen displays a live map showing the user's position on the trail, along with real-time statistics including distance covered, current speed, altitude, elapsed time, and current phase (starting, exploring, or resting).

All tracking data is stored in Firebase's TrailSessions collection, maintaining a persistent record of user activities. The system uses background location tracking with WorkManager to ensure reliable data collection even when the app is in the background. Users receive periodic notifications to confirm they're still safely on the trail.

Emergency Response System
The app includes a sophisticated emergency response infrastructure designed to protect trail users. Users can trigger emergency requests either during active trail exploration or as standalone incidents. Emergency types include medical emergencies, injuries, lost hikers, rescue situations, fire incidents, and wildlife encounters.

When an emergency is triggered, the app automatically enhances location tracking from 2-minute intervals to 1-minute intervals and includes the user's complete trail history and current statistics. Emergency requests are transmitted to Firebase where verified emergency responders can access them through a dedicated responder dashboard.

Emergency responders have their own authentication system with verification requirements. Once verified by administrators, responders can view all active emergency requests, update status with notes, communicate with users, and share their own location during response operations. The emergency lifecycle tracks requests from pending through assigned, in-progress, and resolved states.

Trail Issue Reporting
Users can report trail problems directly through the app, helping maintain trail quality and safety. The trail issue system allows users to document problems with photos, GPS coordinates, descriptions, and categorization. Issues are submitted to a Firebase collection where administrators can review, manage, and track resolution progress. Users can view their previously reported issues and see status updates including admin notes and resolution information.

Community Features
An ambassador program showcases trail advocates and community leaders, while a sponsor system displays partner businesses and advertisers through banner carousels throughout the app.
Users can leave reviews and ratings for trails, sharing their experiences and helping other users make informed decisions about which trails to explore.
